Apple has released a Public Beta of their BootCamp software, which allows any Intel-processor equipped Mac to natively use the Microsoft Windows XP operating system.

The BootCamp software includes drivers that allow for full use of the hardware in Apple’s computers - previously, many important devices like the video card did not have drivers available for them.

When using BootCamp software, please note:

You may only run one operating system at a time - either MacOS X or Windows XP. There’s no “quick switch” between the two - you must reboot to use the other operating system.

The Windows XP system will not be able to seee files on the MacOS X disk partition

MacOS X will be able to see Windows XP’s files, but may or may not be able to write to them, depending on how Windows XP was installed

As this is a Public Beta, many features may not work or be rough around the edges. Please be careful and back up before trying BootCamp.

As a computer consultant, I see virus and spyware infected computers on a regular basis. None of them are Macs. The 3/13 article entitled “UA attack highlights vulnerability of Macs” gives a distorted, empirical example that does not correctly reflect computing reality.

As with all computers, Apple’s MacOS X operating system is vulnerable to outside attacks, but unlike other many other vendors, Apple ships it’s systems in a “closed by default” configuration, which prevents network attacks. The vast majority of Mac systems that are compromised have been modified by their users to deviate from the default secure configuration, have an easy to guess password, or are modified by a malicious insider.

As opposed to Microsoft’s Windows platform which has an insecure, administrative login by default, MacOS X requires a the user to enter a password any time administrative rights are required. Most of the so-called Mac viruses in existence require that the user manually download the virus and enter their administrative password to install it! Compare this to the recent Windows Metafile bug, where simply viewing a picture on the internet could cause any number of viruses or spyware programs to automatically be installed on the computer without any user intervention.

Apple’s line of Mac computers will continue to be the best combination of ease of use and security for most computer users. I encourage everyone who wants to stop fighting with malicious software and start enjoying their computer to seriously consider switching to a Mac.

Today Apple announced upgrades to their professional computing line, with the release of updates to their existing PowerBook G4 and a completely redesigned PowerMac G5 models, including the most powerful Mac to date, the PowerMac G5 Quad.

Changes for the new PowerBooks

The 12″ model remains unchanged, save for a price drop to $1499

The 15″ and 17″ models recieved higher resolution displays

15″ PowerBook - 1440 x 960 pixels

17″ PowerBook - 1680 x 1050 pixels

The 15″ and 17″ also now use faster DDR2 PC-4200 memory

There is now only one default configuration for all the powerbooks, instead of the “Good, Better, Best”.

Changes for the new PowerMac G5’s

There are now three models - two single processor, dual core 2Ghz and 2.3 Ghz machine, and one two processor, dual core 2.5 Ghz machine (the “Quad”). A dual core processor is basically two independant processors on one physical chip, which provides for cost and power savings over having two separate processors.

The PowerMac G5 now uses faster DDR2 PC-4200 memory

They use the PCI Express bus interface instead of the previous AGP 8x and PCI-X interfaces. This allows them to use up to 4 video cards in one computer, and provides far better bandwith to expansion cards. Also, all of the models feature the same number and type of expansion slots - previously the lower end G5 models lacked PCI-X slots.

Speaking of graphics, the G5 now comes exclusively with nVidia graphics cards, all running on a 16x PCIe connection.

Dual Ethernet ports, supporting Jumbo frames, are now standard. This is the same as the xServe G5.

4 USB 2.0 ports intstead of 3 as on previous models

The Airport and Bluetooth antennas are now integrated into the back panel of the computer

If you’re interested in what computer is right for your specific use, please contact us for a consultation.

Named "Mighty Mouse", the new multi-button mouse from Apple teaches the old mouse new tricks.

Apple just introduced the latest rethinking of the mouse, called Mighty Mouse. The concepts of touch-sensitive surfaces and full 360 degree scrolling capability have never before been found together in one device. As a former Windows user, I have become accustomed to the concept of left and right-clicking. When I switched over to Mac, I longed for the ability to do the same with an official Apple mouse but all Apple mice have been single-button, until today. I have already purchased a Logitech Mx310 mouse, which works very well for me on my Powerbook G4, but the idea of 360 degree scrolling and touch-sensitive buttons lures me toward this new creation from Apple. I’m looking forward to trying one out at the La Encantada Apple Store, but to be quite honest I think I will wait for a Bluetooth model to be released before buying another mouse.

Apple released updated iBook and Mac Mini models today.

On the iBooks, the following features have been improved:

* Faster Processors - the 12″ model now has a 1.33 GHz G4 processor, and the 14″ has a 1.42 GHz G4 processor.
* 512MB Memory is standard (up from 256MB), and the maximum memory has been raised to 1.5GB (up from 1.25GB)
* A new Radeon 9550 Graphics chip, supporting new features such as Core Image.
* The wireless Bluetooth 2.0 + EDR and Airport Extreme are standard on all models.
* Sudden Motion Sensor and scrolling trackpad, both features previously available only on Apple’s higher end Powerbook laptops.

On the Mac Mini, there are now three models. All now come with 512MB of Memory standard.

* The low end model is mostly unchanged. It has a 1.25Ghz G4 Processor and 40GB hard drive, and for $499, is the least expensive Mac on the market.
* The middle model comes with a faster 1.42Ghz G4 Processor and an 80GB hard drive for $599, and also includes Airport Extreme and Bluetooth (the older 1.2 version, not 2.0 + EDR like the new iBooks). If you need either of those wireless technologies, it makes sense to get this model, as upgrading the wireless on the low end model to both technolgoies would cost $99, making the price equal to the middle model.
* The high end model is the same as the middle model, with a DVD-writing Superdrive.

If you have any questions about these or other computer models from Apple or other vendors, please feel free to contact us regarding your computer needs. We’ll be glad to help!
